How to Spot Quality Science - Don’t Fall for Hype

By Jon Lesko, covidCAREgroup Researcher

Frequently people ask me about the viability of a specific COVID research program or theory.

Having spent over 30 years in the research and development community I find myself explaining scientific methodology and how it is consistent regardless of the application.

Certainly there are nuances that are specific to a particular field but the overall concepts remain the same.

One of the best ways to illustrate scientific methodology comes from a one-page document titled A Rough Guide to Spotting Bad Science.

It offers a pretty straightforward and simplified explanation of the process in determining the viability of research. There are more parameters and more details than are addressed in this document but at the most fundamental levels have found it explained scientific methodology reasonably well and truly does apply when evaluating research or theories regarding Covid-19.
